John Phillip (J.P.) Smauley, age 105, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2022 at Sweetwater Healthcare Center.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, November 7, 2022 from 6-7:30 PM.
Entombment services will be held at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at Restlawn Memorial Park in El Paso, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
John Phillip Smauley was born on December 26, 1916 on a farm in Roby, Texas to Otto and Ida Mae (Henson) Smauley. Smauley worked on his family's farm until World War II broke out. He was drafted to serve in the Army. He did his basic at Fort Bliss Army Base in El Paso and was stationed there and assigned to the hospital on base as a Medical Technician for the sick and wounded servicemen that came back from the war. He was honorably discharged at the end of the war in 1945.
After the war, he moved to Spokane, Washington and worked as a carpenter until his retirement. After the passing of his wife, he decided to come back home to Texas and settle in Sweetwater. Smauley would have turned 106 on December 26 of this year. He resided at Sweetwater Healthcare Center before his death. "He was a hard-working man, who loved and served his country to the fullest!"
Survivors are two step-sons, Stan Pruitt and wife Jennifer of Sweetwater, Texas, and Darrell Pruitt and wife Linda of Phoenix, Arizona, six grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Ida Mae Smauley, wives, Juanita Smauley and Frances Smauley, and six brothers and sisters.
